Freddie King: Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Famer

Freddie King, the Texas Cannonball, will be posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday.  He was one of the Three Kings of electric blues guitar (with B.B. and Albert), and had a profound influence on many legendary rock guitarists, including Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Clapton famously covered two of King's great tunes, the instrumental Hideaway (on John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) and Have You Ever Loved A Woman (Derek and the Dominos).

Here's Freddie performing them:

There's a great story about Freddie King playing one night at The Maple Leaf, or somewhere similarly iconic, in New Orleans where, as is the custom, headliners often come on well after many revelers in other towns have gone to bed. On this particular night, Freddiie was deeply into his cups by the time he took the stage and had a hard time keeping vertical, much less tearing up his axe. His band mates, though, we're pros and they proceeded to give the people what they came for. At one point, Freddie had taken a seat on his amp and was dozing contentedly in the middle of a rollicking jam while one of the other players went periodically to the mic and with a flourish of the hand waved toward the great master and announced, "Freddie King, ladies and gentlemen, won't you give it up for the great Freddie King!" And the band played on.
