Today is World Day Against The Death Penalty.
There are over 3,200 prisoners on death rows in the United
States. The United States is one of a decreasing number of countries
(now a minority) worldwide that continues to support the death penalty.
As of 2010, 139 countries are abolitionist countries in law or
practice.
This year's World Day focuses on the inhumanity of the death penalty as a
"cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and punishment."
In December 2012, the U.N. General Assembly will vote on a resolution calling for a worldwide halt to its use. You can sign the petition here to call on all countries to support the resolution and all those
which retain the death penalty to establish a moratorium on its use.
