And your argument brings to mind one of Jon Stewart's most memorable quotes: "If you don't stick to your values when they're being tested, they're not values, they're hobbies." Stewart was responding to a comment made by Bill O'Reilly that, "I didn't like the line in the speech about 'We don't have to compromise our values to protect ourselves.' I think sometimes we do."<br /><br />Obama has indeed compromised our values. But given strong Republican antipathy toward him and suspicion that he was not a natural born citizen (until 10 days ago), can you imagine the ferocity of the blow back had he chosen to prosecute members of the previous administration, including its most marquee members, for war crimes. The country would simply not have permitted it. His ENTIRE presidency would have been a non-starter. Obama clearly understood that.
